A Message to Our Community…

AFTD Statement on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Our Work

AFTD’s staff and Board stand in solidarity with Black families. We condemn racism, hatred, violence, and unfair treatment in all forms.

The horrific killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless others demand that we look closely at our work, with intention and self-awareness.

Systems of structural racism and inequality have perpetuated injustices against Black, Indigenous, and People of Color for centuries. These systems contribute directly to economic, social, and health disparities. Such disparities can be roadblocks to a proper FTD diagnosis, quality care, and crucial supports.

We know that as an organization, AFTD can and needs to do better in addressing these disparities, and in better serving individuals and families of color. In our work to fulfill AFTD’s mission, we need to demonstrate our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with greater intention and urgency.

Today, as we launch our work plan for AFTD’s July 2020 – June 2021 fiscal year, we pledge to:

  • Be more proactive in our outreach, sharing information about FTD, the importance of an accurate diagnosis and opportunities to participate in research with more individuals and families of color.
  • Expand our program and service delivery to make AFTD’s information, support, and resources more accessible to those we don’t effectively reach today.
  • Implement internal processes and accountability measures to increase diversity, inclusion and representation on our Board, staff and in key volunteer roles.

Our core values of knowledge, compassion, collaboration, respect and dignity provide our compass for this work.

As we grow and learn – from organizational partners, volunteers and people we serve – we will keep you updated on our progress.

Together, we can realize a world with compassionate care, effective support, and a future free of FTD.
