FTD Biomarkers Initiative

See Active FTD Biomarkers Initiative Award Recipients

Diagnosis of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) currently relies on physical examination, cognitive assessments, laboratory tests, brain imaging, and patient history. Given the complex and overlapping symptomology of FTLD disorders (which includes bvFTD, ALS-FTD, PSP, CBS, and some PPA disorders), accurate diagnosis is difficult, time-intensive, and error-prone; as a result, accurate assessments often rely on the expertise of leading FTLD clinicians based at specialized centers.

Biomarkers are urgently needed as objective tools to improve access to diagnosis by screening individuals in need of evaluation by a neurologist, enabling accurate and timely diagnosis, and identifying pathological types to inform clinical care and prognosis.

"Too many families struggle for years without an FTD diagnosis, which also hinders research progress. It is clear that investing in diagnostic biomarkers for FTD is one of the most critical steps we can take toward improving care and accelerating treatments for this devastating disease. Through the Holloway Family Fund, we are proud to support this initiative, which will help researchers develop the tools needed for earlier and more accurate diagnosis - bringing hope to individuals and families facing FTD." - AFTD Board Member Kristin Holloway.

2025 FTD Biomarkers Initiative Grants

Made possible by the AFTD Holloway Family Fund, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Rainwater Charitable Foundation, and other partners

With support from the Holloway Family Fund, AFTD has partnered with the Alzheimer's Association, the Rainwater Charitable Foundation, and others, to provide funding to researchers with promising, relevant research poised to advance our understanding of FTLD biomarkers. By supporting researchers, we and our partners hope to pave the path to more accurate and timely diagnosis for families affected by FTD.
