When Barbara’s husband was diagnosed with bvFTD in 2016, the two years that followed were the most difficult and isolating of her life. In 2018, Barbara sought support at AFTD’s Annual Education Conference in Chicago. During the conference she learned that the closest support group to her was two hours away. Unable to attend due to the distance, Barbara decided to become an AFTD Support Group Volunteer, and established a group in her local community in Indiana.

Over three years later, Barbara continues to lead that group, providing a safe space for members to share their experiences and find support. “One of the most rewarding things is to see the group members come in frustrated from the devastation caused by FTD, be able to talk openly and honestly and leave the group feeling there is some normalcy in their lives,” Barbara shared. “None of us want to feel alone and FTD is a very isolating disease. Support groups help to make us feel supported and less alone.”

AFTD is immensely grateful to Barbara for her dedication and the vital support she provides to those affected by FTD.
