Dear HelpLine – Support for Veterans
Dear HelpLine,
My loved one is a veteran. Do we qualify for any support?
Navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the benefits you or your loved one might be eligible for as a veteran, can be very confusing. There are three offices within the VA: Veterans Health Administration, Veterans Benefits Administration, and National Cemetery Administration. Each administration has its own application process and programs.
There are many veterans who served but did not use veterans benefits or healthcare in the past. However, veterans are able to apply for benefits at any time. You can learn more about the eligibility requirements on the VA’s website.
If the person is eligible due to military service, the Veterans Healthcare Administration is a very straightforward application process. VA Healthcare does not replace other insurance that the person may have but can provide additional benefits to assist with medical needs including prescriptions, medical equipment, dental and hearing services, or mental health services, as well as home therapy services. Once a veteran is approved for healthcare benefits, they will need to be seen by their VA physician once every 24 months to maintain benefits.
The Veterans Benefits Administration has multiple programs that can be very beneficial for a Veteran and their family. These benefits include veterans’ pension, survivors’ pension, aid and attendance, and housebound programs. These benefits are not only determined by service time but also include a financial review.
All applications and appeals can be assisted by a Veteran Service Officer (VSO) who has been trained and certified in the VA claims and appeals process. You can sign an agreement with a VSO to act on your behalf during the process to assist with your application or appeal. To find a VSO in your area, use the online Manage VA Representative tool or the VA’s Accreditation Search tool.
AFTD has created a resource to help guide you through the process for healthcare and financial benefits. This guide helps with the requirements, paperwork needed, and helpful references. If you have additional questions, AFTD’s HelpLine is here for you. While not trained in the specific paperwork for the VA, the HelpLine can help refer you to appropriate resources.
