Internetartiklar om FTD
AFTD has become aware of several articles circulating on the Internet that suggest haloperidol may be an effective treatment in FTD. These articles are based on a research paper by Luty, et.al. from the November 2010 issue of the Annals of Neurology. This paper reports on a genetic study of a large family in Australia that is affected by frontotemporal dementia with motor neuron disease (FTD/MND also known as FTD/ALS). The findings in this paper suggest research is warranted on the effects of drugs which modulate the Sigma-1 protein for the eventual clinical use of any treatment for FTD and/or ALS in humans. However, based on safety concerns about haloperidol use in patients, AFTD medical advisory council members caution that more evidence of benefit is required to outweigh the risks in order to promote the use of haloperidol for FTD and/or ALS.
