Former Boston Herald cartoonist Jerry Holbert and his wife Cheryl had many plans for retirement, but following Jerry’s FTD diagnosis last year, their lives have taken a different turn.

Jerry, 61, had been exhibiting symptoms for five years prior to his diagnosis. His condition continues to progress, presenting a challenge for Cheryl, who still runs a home business to support her husband’s medical expenses.

Cheryl talks about her family’s FTD journey in a Herald article that emphasizes the strain the disease has placed on the family, both financially and emotionally.

FTD “is constantly attacking what makes a person who they are,” she told the Herald. “It just takes everything in one fell swoop.”

Known for his political cartoons, Jerry left the paper in 2018 after a career that spanned three decades. He continued to draw cartoons with Cheryl’s help for a syndicate service until November.

The article is available on the Herald website.
