January’s Volunteer of the Month: Doreen Putnam
January’s volunteer of the month is Doreen Putnam. In 2014, after hearing a young woman talk about her late husband’s FTD journey, Doreen was so moved she decided to volunteer immediately.
As a Dementia Practitioner, Doreen has worked with and educated thousands of individual and professional caregivers over the last 25+ years. While she doesn’t have a personal connection to FTD specifically, several of her family members have been diagnosed with other forms of dementia. “I felt my perspective, experience and insights could be of help to FTD caregivers,” shares Doreen. “I’m an educator and someone who has great compassion and empathy for those living with any form of dementia.”
Doreen began her volunteer service with AFTD as a support group volunteer, organizing the first and only FTD support group in Rhode Island. She also served as the New England Regional Coordinator for two years, working with and supporting AFTD volunteers throughout six surrounding states. After relocating, she began leading a support group in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Throughout the past six years, Doreen has also raised awareness of FTD and AFTD’s mission through table settings, presentations, and hosting a Meet & Greet.
“As a volunteer with AFTD, I want to do as much as I possibly can to help FTD caregivers and care partners by providing education, listening to their concerns, and offering suggestions that may ease both their journey and that of their loved one. It’s a privilege and a blessing for me to work with AFTD and all of the families I have had contact with over the years,” Doreen reflects. “The relief, joy, acceptance, understanding, and smiles I see on the faces of the FTD caregivers I have worked with over the past six years are the most rewarding things that I could hope for as an AFTD volunteer. I know in my heart that I am making a difference.”
All of us at AFTD are grateful to Doreen for her years of dedication and service, the vital support she provides to those affected by FTD, and her tireless efforts to spread awareness.
