The link between apathy and neurodegenerative diseases including FTD and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is highlighted in an article published by the digital media group, The Quint.

The article offers information about apathy and its presentation, including a lack of motivation and emotional response towards others, as well as its connection to many neurodegenerative diseases that cause dementia. Managing brain diseases can become difficult when a person diagnosed exhibits apathy, as a lack of motivation and enthusiasm can make them less inclined to follow exercise or medication routines.

Apathy is one of the most common symptoms of behavioral variant frontotemporal degeneration (bvFTD) and is associated with a decline in goal-directed behavior in persons with the disease.

De Winternummer 2018 of AFTD’s Partners in FTD Care focuses on understanding and managing apathy to improve FTD care. The issue also includes information on the presentation of apathy in persons with FTD and suggestions for therapeutic interventions.
