Annual Reports

The AFTD proudly boasts two major accomplishments in 2010—an official organization name change and the creation of a professionally filmed documentary on FTD and the families it affects.

After two years of discussions with constituents, our Board of Directors voted to change our name from The Association of Frontotemporal Dementias to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration. Our goal in changing the name was to ensure that our organization and its name encompassed what FTD is really about—progressive loss. By taking some control over the vocabulary we use around these diseases, we hope to shift the framework within which they are viewed.

With the help of several FTD families, we teamed up with a professional filmmaker to create It Is What It Is—a documentary of four families’ journey with FTD. This is our first real opportunity to spread awareness of FTD with real stories of real people, and we look forward to sharing it. In less than two months, the first order of 500 copies of the DVD was sold out. We’re thrilled with the response to the film, and we plan to further market the DVD in 2011.

Revenue for the year ending December 31, 2010 totaled $1,162,948, with 84% coming from individual donations. Expenditures totaled $843,423, of which 40% was spent on basic research and drug discovery research. Management and Fundraising expenses amounted to 15% of all expenditures.
